How do you know if your horse needs a massage?

Here are some indicators that your horse could use a massage: your horse is struggling to find the correct canter lead; parts of your horse (such as a leg, its hind end, or back) may feel cool to the touch; out of character rearing or bucking; lack of poll flexion, head tilt; agitation upon grooming; holding tail to either side; strides become uneven; holding head high or shaking head often. Any of these behaviors could indicate muscular discomfort or imbalance.

Benefits of massage therapy.

Equine massage therapy has many benefits: enhancing blood/oxygen circulation; promoting a healthy immune system; reducing the chance of injury; and maintaining muscular health/flexibility and suppleness. Equine massage also supports healthy ligaments and tendons, increases range of motion, reduces pain, and improves quality of life.

Massage therapy is a great assist to chiropractic work. Massaging your horse before an adjustment loosens the muscles and relaxes the horse allowing for a more fluid adjustment from your chiropractor. Regular massages between chiropractic adjustments or after adjustments aid in maintaining musculoskeletal corrections.

One wonderful benefit to having your horse massaged is relaxation. When your horse is more relaxed and in a better place mentally, your horse will be able to perform better and thus impact behaviors that you may find undesirable. This is beneficial to the rider as well as the horse. Whether you have a senior, athletic, or pleasure horse, massage therapy is a wonderful non-invasive way to maintain your horse’s well being.

My story and background.

As a teenager I studied Dressage and dreamed of owning my own horse one day. In 2013 that dream came true. I rescued an off-track thoroughbred named Lily (tattoo Z42853). Lily was a beautiful chestnut mare with all the challenges one would anticipate with an OTTB broodmare. Her hips were crooked and her joints were worn and stiff with arthritis, and she was not yet 17. Although Lily was the sweetest horse I had met, she still retained all the goofy behaviors that accompany a thoroughbred. She was my project! But I had no idea the doors this beautiful horse would open for me and the amazing places I would go and people I would meet in the process of helping her have the best quality of life I could provide.

I came across an amazing farrier and a couple of wonderful veterinarians in my mission to facilitate better body balance and alignment for my horse. Lily, however, was still having pain and movement issues. One morning I decided to give her a massage! I had recently found that massage therapy relieved many of my own ailments and thought to myself why not try it on my horse. Lily loved her massage and I could tell immediately it had relieved some of her discomfort.

I made it a goal to learn the equine musculoskeletal system in order to pinpoint issues I was feeling and seeing. The results were obvious. She was adjusting herself into better alignment and she was much calmer and seemed more relaxed and settled. My farrier and vets could see a difference too and suggested a chiropractor to aid in our efforts to balance Lily’s physique. The transformation was amazing and I greatly enjoyed working along side the vets, farrier, and chiropractor to improve Lily’s physical abilities and quality of life. Thus began my pursuit of becoming a certified equine massage therapist.

In 2014 I moved to Colorado and studied at the Rocky Mountain School of Animal Acupuncture and Massage. I spent close to two years working with vets, chiropractors, and rehabilitation specialists before I offered my skills as a business. Now that I am living back in Ohio I strive to assist the greater Cincinnati equine community in keeping our horses healthy and maintaining a good quality of life.
